HAMDEN ARTS COMMISSION ANNOUNCES SUMMER CONCERTS,
THANKS SPONSORS FOR MAKING SERIES POSSIBLE

The Hamden Arts Commission is pleased to announce its 2008 free summer concert series, thanking partner Quinnipiac University, the State of Connecticut and Senator Joseph J. Crisco, Jr., and area businesses for making the series possible.

According to Arts Commission chair, Judy Goldberg, "We’re able to present our free summer programs because we receive support from the Town of Hamden which is generously supplemented by sponsorships from other sources. Quinnipiac University is our partner sponsor. Quinnipiac’s generous contribution is an expression of its continued commitment to the Hamden community. The same holds true for the State of Connecticut, thanks to the advocacy of Senator Joseph Crisco."

Other major supporters include the he Hamden Parks & Recreation Department, the Hamden Rotary Club, Yale University, NewAlliance Foundation, the Clarion Hotel and Suites of Hamden, and Harborside Healthcare/Arden House. A full list of sponsors will be announced soon.

This year’s exciting lineup is as follows.

Friday, July 11: Los Lobos

With an illustrious career spanning nearly three decades, Los Lobos is still creating new sounds and touring continuously, playing their unique blend of Tex-Mex, blues, country, ballads, folk and rock. The 2001 recipient of the Billboard Century Award, they are also known for their #1 hit, La Bamba (the soundtrack to the movie of the same name), and another top hit, Come On, Let’s Go.

Friday, July 18: The Fifth Dimension

A concert of all top hits by the famous group (inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002). The Fifth Dimension became popular in the 1960s and 1970s with such hits as Up, Up and Away, Stoned Soul Picnic, Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In, Wedding Bell Blues, Go Where You Wanna Go, One Less Bell to Answer, and I Didn’t Get to Sleep at All, among others.

Friday, July 25: Starship with Mickey Thomas

Mickey Thomas was the soaring voice of Jefferson Starship starting in 1979 with the #1 hit, Jane. Then with the renamed Starship throughout the 80s and 90s, his powerful vocals are heard on such hits as We Built This City, No Way Out, Sara, the Oscar-nominated Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now, It’s Not Over Till It’s Over, Fooled Around and Fell in Love, and many more.

Friday, August 1: Temptation Review with Dennis Edwards

One of two groups allowed to use the Temptations’ name, this one features singer Dennis Edwards, with the Temptations since 1968, who has 14 gold albums, five Grammy’s, and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The multi-award winning Motown group will perform a concert of top hits, including My Girl, Ain’t Too Proud to Beg, Papa Was a Rolling Stone and Just My Imagination.

The concerts begin at 7:30 pm at Meadowbrook Park, 2761 Dixwell Avenue. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and pack a picnic.

In the event of miserable weather, concerts may move to Hamden High School, if circumstances allow. For rain information, please listen to AM 1220 WQUN or call the Arts Commission at 287-2546.

The Spring Glen Garden Club, a fixture in the community since 1925, is a charter member of The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc. since 1929.

The Garden Club’s ongoing projects include The Bird and Butterfly Garden at Lockwood Farm, the Historical Herb Garden at the Jonathan Dickerman House, Eli Whitney Park Gardens, and the plants at the Town Hall Legislative Council Chambers.

As part of Hamden’s Goldenbells Festival the Club will be again hosting Plant Doctors’ Day, which will be held Sat. May 10th at the Miller Memorial Library, Dixwell Ave., Hamden, Ct. The time is from 10am till  1pm.

In addition, the Spring Glen Garden Club will celebrate Arbor Day, Fri. April 25, by donating five American Elms trees to be planted in the New Town Center Park.  The funds for theses trees came from our “Wreaths for Trees” sales from the past three years. Trees were purchased for us by Broken Arrow Nursery and will be planted by the Hamden Public Works Dept.

The Garden Club will also take part in Hamden’s Earth Day, Sat. April 26, to be held at the Hamden Middle School, 2623 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, Ct.  Please stop by our booth and see what the Club is doing to brighten up the Hamden Landscape.
